JACQUELINE WEDLAKE HATTON
ARTIST
Photograph by Jean Michael O’Shea
Born and bred in Cornwall, a post modern addition to her ancient Cornish ancestors, Jacqueline grew up with the distinctive ancient sites that abound in Cornwall. This and the then comparatively wild and intriguing character of the landscape informed her sensibility and provides a rich backdrop to her art practice and philosophy. The sense of these aspects is what inspires her paintings. Jacqueliine engages with and deepens her connection to place through her love of detail and colour. Trees are of special interest, from the humble hawthorns to the gnarly old oaks, Jacqueline is engaged with observations of how their growth patterns belie the effects of environment and weather. Drawing from an experimental background combined with a respect for tradition her work fuses often bold colour and mark making with delicately articulate passages. Jacqueline is a member of The Arborealists, a group of artists who specialise in paintings of trees.
